Providence is calling a Laboratory Assistant 2 to its Clinical Laboratory at Providence Medford Medical Center in Medford , OR. This is an on-call/per diem position. Staff hired into this role are asked to pick up day, evening, night shifts. You will have ability to view available shifts 6 weeks in advance. Schedules are finalized 4 weeks in advance. Our per diem staff earn an extra 15% in lieu of benefits pay premium!

We are seeking a Laboratory Assistant 2 who will be responsible for the accurate and timely receiving, processing, and labeling of laboratory specimens, and the appropriate handling and/or disbursement of laboratory data and patient results. Support personnel work with acute-care and outpatient caregivers, vendors, consultants, and other Laboratory Services staff in performing their duty. Additionally, this position is responsible for registering outpatient laboratory encounters obtaining complex demographic, insurance, and medical information. Successful candidates will maintain up to date knowledge and competency on required registration functions. Lab Assistant utilize multiple computer applications in order to complete patient encounters.
In this position you will have the following responsibilities:
Demonstrate competency in compliance by carrying out personal responsibilities required by the PH&S Laboratory Compliance Plan, including annual training
Maintain knowledge of numerous complex dynamic compliance requirements
Ensure compliance is met with various Federal, State and other regulatory bodies which includes, but is not limited to CMS (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services), CAP, TJC (The Joint Commission), CLIA, EMTALA, COBRA and HIPPA
Understand specimen collection and handling requirements, general laboratory workflow and basic medical terminology
Accurately follow policies and procedures for specimen handling and processing, referrals, reporting, filing, and/or recording patient results
Use basic computer skills to access appropriate HIS/LIS information
Recognize problems and identifies discrepancies, specimen integrity issues and is able to troubleshoot, resolve and document variances
Verify patient information and specimen requirements
Document and accurately receives, processes and distributes specimens to assure proper preservation of samples and timely analysis and reporting of results
Exhibit excellent telephone etiquette and Service Excellence skills, utilizing key words at key times
Promptly and accurately documents basic specimen, patient, or client problems using the appropriate forms, logs, etc.
Complete written variances to ensure continuous quality improvement
Participate in department QA projects as requested or required
Complete assigned tasks, meeting section turn-around-times
Understand and supports departmental goals
Respond to basic laboratory questions with accurate and complete information and refers questions appropriately
Required qualifications for this position includes:
Two (2) years of Healthcare or related field experience, -OR- a combination of applicable experience and education
Clerical or client services experience
Experience with State and Federal and other regulatory Compliance Regulations including Medicare Secondary Payor (MSP), EMTALA, ABN, HIPPA
Demonstrated outstanding Service Excellence experience
Demonstrated proficiency in the use of personal computer applications
Knowledge of medical terminology, registration functions, and departmental policies and procedures
Able to prioritize work and manage time
Preferred qualifications for this position includes:
Two (2) years college -OR- Associate's Degree -OR- Bachelor's Degree: Courses in biological sciences, anatomy, and medical terminology
Certification from a Clinical Laboratory Assistant program -OR- Certification from a phlebotomy program with one (1) year of phlebotomy related experience, or three (3) years related experience
Certification from an approved government agency or nationally recognized professional organization (ASCP, NCA, etc.)
Industry-related experience in a high volume, acute care setting
Two (2) years of Phlebotomy, medical assisting, research, clinical laboratory experience, or certification
Job experience in specimen collection, specimen preparation and equipment operation, pneumatic tubes systems and other laboratory equipment
Knowledge of specimen handling and collection requirements, general laboratory workflow and basic medical terminology, Biology, understanding of Laboratory Medicine, anatomy and physiology, or equivalent exposure to these topics
