Providence Health & Services Environmental Services Supervisor in Medford, Oregon


Providence is calling an Environmental Services Supervisor to Providence Medford Medical Center in Medford, OR. This is a full-time evening shift position. Hours are primarily 3pm-11:30pm.

We are seeking an Environmental Services Supervisor who will be responsible for the planning, coordinating and supervision of all activities of the Environmental Services Department within Providence Health & Services PSA and on-site satellite facilities. Directly supervises employees with varying degrees of educational and communication skills. The main function of the Environmental Services Department is to provide a safe, clean, orderly, and infection free environment enhancing employee and patient satisfaction. Environmental Services also acts as support to the Linen, and Patient Transportation departments. The supervisor assigns work, monitors quality, implements policies and procedures as directed making recommendations for procedure changes to streamline processes and increase productivity.

In this position you will have the following responsibilities:

  • Supervise daily activities of Environmental Services personnel throughout the hospital and on-site satellite clinics and inspects areas of responsibility on a daily basis to ensure cleanliness and infection control standards are met by conducting and documenting quality control checks. Conducts follow-up on problem areas.

  • Assure proper execution of PHS regional, hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Contributes to the establishment of general policies and procedures for the department.

  • Conduct annual staff performance evaluations. Recommends wage/salary adjustments, promotions, transfers, hires and terminations as necessary.

  • Actively participate in the hiring process by interviewing applicants and/or recommending selections.

  • Conduct and coordinate all levels of corrective action up to and including terminations.

  • Coordinate, perform and document the training of all employees in the procedures and activities of Environmental Services, delegating to designated staff trainers as necessary.

  • Problem-solve counsels and coaches Environmental Services staff. Problem-solves with ancillary departments regarding mutual questions, concerns and problems.

  • Monitor the Bed Placement System:

  • Supervisor is responsible for proactively monitoring the bed placement system as deemed necessary to ensure the efficiency of the overall bed cleaning process.

  • Monitor, organize and train hospital department employees on a regular basis.

  • Assure that departments are utilizing the bed placement system for discharge services, ensuring the hospital meets Capacity Management/Throughput goals.

  • Prioritize requests and assigns staff according to where they are and when they will be finished with their current assignments utilizing bed placement system as needed.

  • Communicate effectively with patients and families, physicians and their office staffs, co-workers, supervisors and other hospital departments. Actively seeks and responds as appropriate to customers feedback and suggestions performing service recovery as necessary.

  • Schedule work assignments for staff, adjusting duties as work demands fluctuate while keeping within budget guidelines. Maintains record-keeping for daily labor statistics. Acts as a timekeeping authority.

  • Work with Manager in analyzing changes in workflow to adjust staffing and equipment. Recommends suggestions on how to reduce FTEs while streamlining productivity and maintaining quality.

  • Keep Environmental Services staff informed of changes occurring regarding Providence Health & Services, the hospital, and the department that will affect them, and the level of patient service provided. Facilitates department meetings.

  • Serve on committees that focus on matters involving but not limited to: infection prevention, diversity, safety, employee engagement, patient satisfaction, sustainability, and others as delegated.

  • Create and maintain on-line inventory of department equipment and supplies for the facility. Works with staff and department Director/Manager in ascertaining additional equipment/supply needs and specifications. Works with Director/Manager in ongoing ordering of replacement and additional equipment/supply. Schedules cleaning and maintenance of all department equipment.

  • Serve as marketing liaison for Environmental Services to all hospital departments and associated Medical Offices. Organizes new services as needed.

  • Work with the Director/Manager in the preparation of annual budget and compares monthly performance against the budget.

  • Actively participate in the achievement of department goals and objectives.

  • Maintain and enhance personal expertise through appropriate educational experiences.

  • Establish and promote teamwork for a successful staff through positive interaction and morale building, direction, and leadership.

  • Biological waste treatment and disposal:

  • Operation of steam sterilizer to treat regulated medical waste.

  • Conduct biological monitoring daily.

  • Check and maintain accurate temperature logs, and document of destruction/manifests

  • Check the overall operation of the steam sterilizer daily to ensure optimal performance

  • Follow all departmental policies and procedures and operates as a role model for subordinate staff, ensuring adherence to departmental policies and procedures.


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • H.S. Diploma or GED

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • 5 years experience working in the health care field.

  • 1 year supervisory experience in basic personnel.
