Providence Health & Services Engineer - Maintenance, General in Medford, Oregon


Providence is calling an General Maintenance Engineer to join its Facilities Services team at Providence Medford Medical Center in Medford, OR. This is a full-time position working 4, 10 hour night shifts. The scheduled work hours are primarily Sunday thru Wednesday from 9pm - 7:30am (shift start time may shift slightly depending on operational need).

We are seeking a Engineer Maintenance General - Facility Services that will operate and maintain stationary and mobile mechanical, electrical, electronic, communications, air-conditioning, HVAC equipment and medical gas systems to provide heating, air-conditioning, steam, lights and power to the hospital. Insures the comfort, safety and security of patients, doctors and staff through a diligent, professional and cost-effective approach to maintenance, engineering and construction.

In this position you will have the following responsibilities:

  • Operate and record the operational status of various plant equipment

  • Operate and record the operational status of boilers, chillers, compressors, pumps, controls and other associated plant equipment

  • Aware when plant equipment is not functioning properly and takes appropriate action to keep plant equipment on line

  • Operate plant equipment in the natural gas or oil modes, correctly.

  • Observe operational status of heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, including associated equipment

  • Record status when assigned. Has knowledge of, or knows how to find out, what equipment serves which area(s)

  • Able to recognize when equipment is not operating correctly, and takes the appropriate action to keep staff and patients comfortable, in a safe manner

  • Calibrate room thermostats.

  • Maintain and check refrigeration equipment

  • Respond to refrigeration equipment calls

  • Recognize when the refrigeration system is not performing correctly

  • Look for obvious problems, and makes repairs when possible, when unable to repair, advises staff and reports broken equipment to staff or contractor

  • Maintain dietary equipment

  • Respond to dietary equipment calls

  • Recognize when the dietary equipment is not operating correctly

  • Check for gas leaks, makes adjustments to controls, resets breakers, restarts pilot lights and other minor repairs as needed, in order to keep the kitchen operational, If unable to repair the equipment, advises staff and reports the problem to appropriate engineering staff or contractor

  • Maintain the electrical equipment

  • Perform electrical safety inspections, does not allow unsafe items into the facility

  • Respond to calls relating to electrical problems

  • Recognize and responds appropriately to electrical situation

  • Evaluate the situation and advises the staff when unable to make immediate repairs

  • Report problems to the appropriate engineering staff or contractor

  • Maintain plumbing equipment

  • Respond to calls relating to plumbing problems

  • Assess and make repairs when possible

  • Notify staff and appropriate engineering or contractor when further repairs are required

  • Able to quickly locate, and shut off valves to control damage, when required

  • Maintain and operates fire systems

  • Properly operate fire system controls as needed

  • Inspect and assist with required testing of fire suppression and detection systems, can quickly locate isolation valves for the automatic sprinkler system for different systems within the facility

  • Operate and maintain the emergency generator

  • Load-tests the generator, as required by NFPA codes

  • Follow testing procedures for generator and associated equipment

  • Operate generator equipment correctly during scheduled maintenance or during actual power outages

  • Maintain medical gas systems

  • Operate and perform preventative and corrective maintenance on bulk Medical Gas supply and distribution equipment, i.e., bulk O2, Nitrous manifold system, Nitrogen manifold system, Medical Air Compressor system, Medical Vacuum Compressor system, Master, Area, and local Alarms, and terminal locations (rooms)

  • Change gas bottles as required

  • Repairs gas outlets as required

  • Maintain pool and pool equipment

  • Respond to pool-related complaints

  • Take daily samples and maintains proper chemical balance within acceptable levels, according to Oregon State Health Department regulations

  • Maintain beds, gurneys, wheelchairs and other equipment

  • Inspect and repair equipment and furniture in a timely manner

  • Maintain television, nurse-call system and other patient or staff equipment

  • Respond to call for patient equipment

  • Comply with the general requirements of the department

  • Maintain minimum levels of qualification

  • Complete all training as required

  • Maintain shop equipment and tools, assuring that they are clean, neat and operational

  • Clean tools and returns them to the proper place upon completion of work

  • Clean and maintains assigned shop and mechanical areas on a weekly basis

  • Clean up debris during, and on completion of maintenance on equipment and facilities, areas are left in a clean and orderly condition

  • Respond to calls with appropriate urgency

  • Complete assigned work orders in a timely manner

  • Advise the Engineering Manager when help is needed, and/or is unable to complete a task within an established timeframe

  • Keep a professional and cooperative attitude

  • Document activity in CMMS system

  • Complete preventive maintenance as scheduled and documents activity in TMS System, does not allow a high-priority inspection or maintenance item pass the month due

  • Miscellaneous duties and Responsibilities including;

  • Participate in facility disaster planning, drills and safety programs

  • Train other facility staff members as requested

  • Share knowledge and techniques with other engineers

  • Maintain records and reports

  • Complete all required paperwork; i.e., work orders, supply requisitions, inspection forms, time cards, etc. accurately and in a timely manner

  • Submit reports, system evaluations or readings, as directed, and within established timeframes

  • Perform all work in accordance with accepted safe work practices and in compliance with local, State and national electrical codes

  • Immediately notifies the Facilities Manager of unsafe conditions which requires action on the part of the manager.


Required qualifications for this position includes:

  • Two (2) years of experience operating and maintaining Facility-related equipment and systems typically found in a large commercial building complex, school districts, casino's, or other campus environment

  • Background in the following: HVAC/R, Boilers, Chillers, Electrical, Fire Alarm, Fire Suppression, plumbing, Medical Gas and Vacuum Systems, carpentry and painting

Preferred qualifications for this position includes:

  • Oregon Limited Maintenance Electrical License (LME)

  • Hospital and/or Physical Plant experience
